Eden House
Status: Under Construction
Eden House, located in Portland’s southwest hills, takes advantage of the lot’s ‘big dipper’ shape by using the unique lot constraints as an inspiration for the layout of this modern home. To maximize the usable site area and incorporate the house program, a staggered slip form is used to take advantage of the dipper’s handle by connecting the front and back yards with an inhabitable public family space. An open floor plan with expansive openings allows the house and landscape to blend continuously from the front of the lot to the back, following the topography and blurring the line between indoor + outdoor living. The backyard is programmed to fit within the narrow setbacks with a sunken pool and hot tub, outdoor kitchen, and a double height shed / treehouse overlooking the property.
Finishes are carefully selected to provide a complement of indoor + outdoor aesthetics. Wood is used to provide warmth and connection to the interior and exterior living spaces while adding durability and timelessness to the home. The slab on grade is thermally activated and finished to provide a tactile warmth and material honesty that embraces its dynamic nature.
The two-story entry vestibule serves as a central hub and connector between the more public spaces and intimate family spaces next to and above the main floor. A library on the second floor of the vestibule activates an otherwise transient space and serves as another layer of privacy between the master wing and guest areas while also providing a showcase area for family artwork and collections.
